The name of our nation has many variants listed in the history books. When trying to find the bits and pieces of our past do not fail to go to the index of a book and look for Tomicas, Thonicas, Tonicas or Tunicas. The spelling in Tunica is "ta yoroniku" and this is the name our ancestors went by. "Ta" mean "the", "oni" means "man" or "person". Collectively "Ta yoroniku" means "the people". The older people pronounce Tunica as "too-nee-ka" where the stress is placed on the second syllable. Scholars agree that many indigenous groups call themselves "the people" of "the first people". This is seen throughout the Americas as well as the rest of the world.When walking or driving on Yuroni Trail remember that this is another variant of "ta yo ro nika" �the people- our people. Heni ta yoro niku is a greeting of the Tunica people which means "Greetings the people". |
